Suppose my take-home message for people who have either been diagnosed with these diseases or who are suffering and have suffered for a long time, is that the management options are there. On the whole, the improvements that we’ve seen, even in 20 years that I’ve seen between how these diseases can be (1) put under control but (2) the level of function or the quality of life you can achieve suffering from these conditions is so much greater than it has been.
It needs good care, it needs very consistent sort of messages from your doctor. You need to be part of that care. You need to make your decisions. You need to be very, very careful around your other lifestyle choices so that you don’t end up in a situation where you feel like the disease controls you and your life but if you make the right decisions, if you have the support around you, if you have a very clear plan, if you stick to those goals, then you can pretty much manage this condition and move towards that stage where you have a much higher quality of life.
